What to say in a birthday video message: 40 ideas by relationship
40 things to say in a birthday video message, sorted by who's talking: best friend, partner, sibling, parent, grown child, grandchild, coworker or an old friend. Plus how long to talk and what to skip.
Say one specific memory, one thing you like about them right now, and one small wish for the year ahead, then stop. That fits in under a minute, and it's the kind of message people play twice.
Below are 40 lines you can use as they are or bend to fit, grouped by who's talking. Swap in your own names, places and years. The details are what make it land, so don't sand them off.
From a best friend
- "Fifteen years ago you lent me your car for a weekend and I brought it back with a quarter tank and a traffic cone in the back seat. You never asked about the cone. Happy birthday."
- "You're still the only person who'll text me at 1 a.m. to argue about whether a hot dog is a sandwich. Happy birthday. It's a sandwich."
- "You're the first person I call with good news, because you actually pick up. Happy birthday, Dana."
- "This year you started a new job and moved apartments in the same month, and you still showed up to my kid's piano recital. I noticed."
- "Same diner, same booth, same argument about splitting the check. I'm paying this year. Mostly."
From a partner
- "You still warm up my side of the car before I get in on cold mornings, and I've never said thank you out loud. Thank you."
- "Four years ago you burned the lasagna so badly the smoke alarm went off for ten minutes, and we ate cereal on the kitchen floor. Still one of my favorite dinners."
- "The best day of my year was that Tuesday you took off work for no reason and we drove to the lake. I'd like more Tuesdays like that."
- "I love that you talk to the dog like a coworker who's a little behind on a project. Please keep doing that."
- "My wish for you this year is one full weekend with no plans. I'll handle the phone."
From a sibling
- "Happy birthday from the only person who knows you cut your own bangs in 1998 and loves you anyway. I have the photo. I'm keeping the photo."
- "Mom still thinks I broke the lamp. I've covered for you for 25 years. Consider that your present."
- "You let me ride in the front seat and pick the radio station when I was eight. It was the first time I felt like a grown-up, and I still think about it."
- "We used to fight over the bathroom every morning. Now I'd drive four hours to hear you complain about my parking. Happy birthday, Sam."
- "I'm proud of the job and the house. I'm prouder that you call Dad every Sunday. He talks about it all week."
From a parent
- "The day you were born it snowed in April and your dad got the car stuck in the hospital parking lot. You've been making an entrance ever since."
- "You were the kid who gave away your cupcake at every birthday party. You still do that, just with bigger things now."
- "Loving you is my job. Liking you is extra, and that part you earned all by yourself."
- "At six you told me you'd be a dinosaur scientist and a mailman. You went into accounting instead, which is almost as exciting, and I'm proud of every bit of it."
- "Call me when you get a minute this week. No reason. I like hearing about your day."
Get everyone's messages into one video
Share one link, everyone adds a short video, voice note or written message from their phone, and on the birthday it all plays as one video.
From a grown child
- "Mom, you drove me to 6 a.m. swim practice for four years and never said one word about the chlorine smell in the car. I owe you about 800 breakfasts."
- "Dad, I finally understand why you checked the locks three times every night. I do it now. Happy birthday from your newest copycat."
- "Every time I fix something in my apartment I hear you say 'righty tighty' in my head. It works every time."
- "You made me write thank-you notes when I was seven and I hated it. I write them for everything now. So: thank you."
- "This year I'm taking you back to the seafood place on the pier where we went after my graduation. My treat. You can order for the table like you always do."
From a grandchild
- "Grandpa, I still have the two-dollar bill you gave me when I lost my first tooth. I never spent it."
- "Grandma, nobody else makes pancakes shaped like the first letter of my name. I checked. Happy birthday."
- "You taught me gin rummy and then beat me for eleven years straight. I'm coming for you at Thanksgiving."
- "My friends can't believe my grandma sends better GIFs than they do. Happy birthday to the funniest person in our family group chat."
- "Happy birthday, Nana. I lost a tooth. It's in a bag. I'll show you." (For little kids, let them say whatever they want. It will beat anything you write for them.)
From a coworker
- "Happy birthday, Priya. Thank you for being the one person who refills the coffee machine instead of leaving half an inch in the pot."
- "Sitting next to you made the spring launch bearable. I still don't know how you stayed calm on that 7 a.m. call with the vendor."
- "You're the reason I know how to make a pivot table. Happy birthday to our unofficial IT department."
- "I hope your birthday has zero meetings, a quiet inbox and cake that didn't come from the gas station."
- "The team laughs more since you joined. That's hard to put in a performance review, so I'm putting it here."
From an old friend you rarely see
- "We haven't talked since the reunion, but I think of you every time I drive past that Taco Bell on Route 9. Happy birthday, Chris."
- "I know it's been years. I wanted you to know the summer we worked at the pool is still one of my favorite summers."
- "I saw you took up pottery. The mug in your photo was lopsided in exactly the way a handmade mug should be."
- "You drove me home after my first breakup and let me play the same song six times in a row. I never thanked you properly. Thank you."
- "Let's not wait for another birthday. I'm in town in March, and coffee's on me."
How long to talk
Aim for 30 to 60 seconds. A minute feels short while you're recording and long when someone is watching, and if fifteen people each talk for two minutes, the birthday person is sitting there for half an hour.
A few things that help:
- Write three words on a sticky note before you start: the memory, the thing you like, the wish. Glance at it if you lose your place.
- Record somewhere quiet, with a window in front of you and not behind you.
- Hold the phone at eye level. Below the chin is how every uncle ends up filming his own nostrils.
- Do it twice and keep the second one. The first take is for getting the nerves out.
- End on the wish, then stop talking. Don't trail off into "okay, um, that's it, bye."
What to avoid
Age jokes that might not land. One "you're old" line is fine between people who tease each other. If you're not sure, skip it. The person who hates turning 40 won't say so on camera.
Inside jokes that need a translator. If the story only makes sense to the two of you and takes a minute to explain, save it for a text. Pick a memory the rest of the room can follow.
Anything you wouldn't say in front of their grandmother. Birthday videos get watched on the couch with family around, sometimes with a whole party watching. The spring break story can wait.
People who aren't there. Don't bring up an ex, a falling-out or someone they've lost unless you know they'd want it mentioned.
Reading a speech. It's obvious when your eyes are moving left to right. Talk to the camera like it's them across a table.
Apologizing for how you look. Nobody watching cares that you just got back from the gym.
Put them all in one place
When more than a few people want to say something, collect it all so the birthday person gets every message at once instead of forty separate texts. The birthday page has more ideas and shows how a group birthday video comes together, and you can watch a sample video to see what a finished one looks like.
